Frequently Asked Questions

Does everyone need to take a Pre-Arrival test?

Yes - you must take a test even if:

You must take the test in the 3 days before the service on which you will arrive into England departs. For example, if you travel directly to England on Friday, you can take the test on or after Tuesday and will need to have the negative result available before boarding on Friday.

Whilst you can choose to find a local private test provider in the place where you start your journey (which can include a PCR test rather than an Antigen test), you may decide to purchase your Pre-Arrival test from a private provider in the UK and take it abroad with you. This is a low-hassle option allowing you conduct the test yourself (self-swabbing is sometimes overseen via a video call) and receive a fast result via a UK-based provider.

Can I use any type of Antigen test for my Pre-Arrival test?

No. You must ensure that your chosen provider will supply a certificate to accompany your Negative result and prove that you are able to travel. Your test result can be provided as a printed document, an email, or a text message on your phone.

You must make sure that the test provider you choose can meet the performance standards for pre-departure testing. It’s your responsibility to ensure the test meets the minimum standards for sensitivity, specificity and viral load details.

Can I use a free NHS Rapid Antigen test to travel?

No, unfortunately free NHS Rapid Antigen tests cannot be used for international travel as they are not accompanied by a Fit to Fly certificate. You should instead book your test through a private provider (see our Provider list above).
